Human Procedural Skill Acquisition: Theory, Model and Psychological Validation
نویسنده
چکیده
It is widely held that ordinary natural language conversations are governed by tacit conventions. called felicity conditions or conversational postulates (Austin. 1962: Grice. 1975: Gordon & Lakoff, 1975). Learning a procedural skill is also a communication act. The teacher communicates a procedure to the student over the course of several lessons. The central idea of the theory to be presented is that there are specific felicity conditions that govern learning. In particular, five newly discovered felicity conditions govern the kind of skill acquisition studied here. The theory has been embedded in a learning model. a large Al-based computer program. The model’s performance has been compared to data from several thousand students learning ordinary mathematical procedures: subtracting multidigit numbers, adding fractions, and solving simple algebraic equations. A key criterion for the theory is that the set of procedures that the model learns should exactly match the set of procedures that students actually acquire, including their “buggy” procedures. However, much more is needed for psychological validation of this theory, or any complex Al-based theory, than merely testing its predictions. The method used with this theory is presented.

Cross-linguistic Validation of Processability Theory: The Case of EFL Iranian Students’ Speaking Skill
Abstract This study investigated the validity of processability theory proposed by Pienemann (1998/2015) among Iranian EFL learners’ oral performance. The theory defines six procedural stages for learners in the process of second language acquisition. In order to conduct the study, 10 intermediate EFL learners were selected based on their performance on Oxford Placement Test. Then, they partici...

متن کاملSkill Acquisition 1 Production Composition : A Simple Theory of Complex Skill Acquisition NIELS
In psychology, many of theories of skill acquisition have had great success in addressing the fine details of learning relatively simple tasks, but can they scale up to complex tasks that are more typical of human learning in the real world? In this paper we describe production composition, a theory of skill acquisition that combines aspects of the theories forwarded by Anderson (1982) and Newe...
متن کاملCan Models Learned from a Dataset Reflect Acquisition of Procedural Knowledge? An Experiment with Automatic Measurement of Online Review Quality
Can models learned from a dataset reflect how good are humans at mastering a particular skill? This paper studies this question in the context of online reviews writing, where the skill corresponds to the procedural knowledge needed to write helpful reviews. To this end, we model the quality of a review by a combination of various metrics stemming from text analysis (like readability, polarity,...
متن کاملTherapist Skills: A Cognitive Model of their Acquisition and Refinement
A new model of therapist skill development is presented. Grounded in information processing theory, it provides a comprehensive framework that accounts for a range of phenomena encountered by trainers and trainees – for example, why different training methods are needed for different elements of therapist skill. The model features three principal systems: declarative, procedural and reflective ...
